If the Bible is God's Word...

I heard a story once of a college professor teaching a "Bible as Literature" course.  If you know anything about these type of courses they're usually taught by atheists who examine the Bible as if it were just another fallible, human-produced piece of literature.

Each semester, knowing there would be Christians in the class, the professor would start out the first class with a broad survey.

"Who in here claims to be a Christian?" And many of the hands would go up.

"Alright, how many of you think that this book contains the words of God?" And all of the hands would remain raised.

"Alright.  Now... how many of you have read every word in this book?" And then almost every hand would go down.

"You see," he would proclaim, "You don't really believe they're the words of God.  Otherwise you'd read and know them!"

And he has a great point.

How many of us who claim to be Christians and claim to believe that the words in the Bible are the very words of the God of the universe haven't even read them all?  How many of us barely pick up our Bibles during the week - except of course to carry them to church?

We might say we believe our Bibles contain the words of God, but if you look at our actions - how much time we spend reading them, memorizing them, getting to know them, studying them - it's clear we really don't comprehend what we're saying.

If the Bible really is the words of the God of the universe, the God who said "Let there be light," and light just came into being out of nothing, the God who was never caused or born or created, the God who knows every atom in the universe in intricate detail and holds them all in place, the God of all power and knowledge and wisdom and authority... we should cherish it more than anything else we have!

Take some time today and just mediate on the astounding fact that the God of the universe has given us a book with his words in it.  How important is the Bible!  How precious is it!  How lucky and blessed are we that we have such easy access to it?

The people in this video below understand.  Watch it... you'll see what I mean.
